Distribution of Eosinophils in the State of Anaphylactic Shock

Abstract
The distribution of eosinophilic leucocyles in the living body is closely related to the state of anaphylaxis, allergy, various antigen-antibody reactions, histaminic effects. Migration of eosinophils in the peripheral blood stream, intraperitoneal fluid, and various other organs in animals was studied immediately after death induced by anaphylactic shock.
Experimental studies were done on mice weighing 20-30 gm.
The animals were injected once a day for 5days intraperitoneally with 1 % dry egg white mixed with normal saline suspension. After 2 weeks, death by anaphylactic shock was induced by an intracardiac injection of 0.5cc./100 gm. of body weight using egg white suspension.
The following results were obtained. Eosinophils increased by 214% in the peripheral blood in the anaphylactic group as compared with 18% in the control group. Intraperitoneal fluid revealed a 74.3% increase in the anaphylactic group. In the control group, there was a decrease.
The cells increased most prominently in the lungs followed next by the small intestine and then to lesser degrees in the bone marrow, spleen and skin in that order.
No eosinophils were found in the liver or spleen in either anaphylactic. or control group. In the lung the eosinophils collected massively in the bronchioles & peribronchial fibrous tissue.
The cells were prominent in the lamina propria mucosae and in the submucous fibrous tissue, and particularly were they prominent in the tissue surrounding the paneth cells.
